What We Do/Mission
The National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth
Violence Prevention provides technical assistance and training to 83 school
districts and communities that receive grants from the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) of the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services.
Our staff provides grantees with training, technical assistance,
and resources. We help grantees:
- design, implement, and analyze needs assessments
- develop and implement strategic plans
- understand, locate, and use evidence-based interventions
- establish and sustain coalitions and other partnerships
- implement interventions that are effective and culturally
appropriate
- design and implement evaluations
- utilize social marketing, public education, and other
communication strategies
- network with their peers and engage in peer-mentoring
- sustain projects and their activities beyond their
initial Federal funding
We provide grantees with:
- technical assistance and consultation in person, by
telephone, and by e-mail
- conferences, meetings, and workshops
- distance learning events, including web-based courses
- web-based opportunities to discuss issues with our
staff, other grantees, and experts
- a comprehensive website that includes publications,
resources, funding information, and a virtual library
The National Center is a project of Education Development
Center, Inc. in collaboration with the American Institutes for Research.
It is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC)is
an international, non-profit organization with more than 400 projects
dedicated to enhancing learning and promoting health. The National Center
is housed in EDC’s Health and Human
Development Programs, which seeks to foster healthy lifestyles and
create healthy and safe environments where people live, learn, and work.
American Institutes for Research (AIR)
is a not-for-profit corporation that performs basic and applied research,
provides technical support, and conducts behavioral and social science
analyses. AIR’s program efforts focus on education, health, individual
and organizational performance, and quality of life.
The Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a division of the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA's mission is to build
resilience and facilitate recovery for people with or at risk for substance
abuse and mental illness.
